First-Time Cruise Tips: What We Wish We Knew Before Setting Sail

From carry-ons to comedy shows—your guide to making the most of your first cruise (without looking like a rookie).

So, you’re going on your very first cruise? First of all—congratulations! You’re about to step into one of the most fun, relaxing, and downright addictive ways to travel. We’ve cruised more times than we can count, and while we love a good sea breeze and a belly flop contest, there are a few things we wish we had known before our first voyage.

If you’re cruising for the first time, here are some tried-and-true tips from Gramps and Honey Bee to help you cruise smarter, not harder.

🧳 1. Pack Light (Trust Us!)

You don’t need three outfits per day, no matter how many theme nights you’re planning for. Stick with mix-and-match basics, comfy shoes, and a few accessories to dress things up. We love packing cubes and a small laundry bag to keep things organized—and Honey Bee never boards without her trusty Bogg Bag

🎒 2. Don’t Forget Carry-On Essentials

You might be one of the first to board (yay!), but your stateroom could be hours away from being ready—and your luggage even longer. Be sure to bring a carry-on with your meds, sunscreen, a swimsuit, flip-flops, and anything else you’ll need to enjoy the afternoon. Nothing like waiting to swim while your suit is still in a suitcase somewhere on Deck 1.

🛟 3. Do the Muster Drill ASAP

Yes, it’s required. Yes, you have to do it. The ship can’t leave until everyone completes the muster drill (that quick safety demo you’ll hear about once you board), so knock it out early. Don’t be the person holding up the entire ship—we’re looking at you, Deck 8!

🍽️ 4. Skip the Buffet on Day One

The Windjammer (if you’re sailing Royal Caribbean) is the hangry battleground of embarkation day. Instead, head to the Main Dining Room for a quieter, seated lunch and let the buffet chaos settle before you dive in later.

🗺️ 5. Learn the Ship Early

These ships are massive. Take a little time after boarding to walk around and figure out where things are—including the best route to your room from key places like the pool deck, dining areas, and theater. Grab a map or use the cruise line’s app—it’s a lifesaver.

6. Plan Ports in Advance

Do some research before you sail so you’re not scrambling the night before you dock. Book excursions early (they fill up fast), and don’t feel like you have to book through the cruise line—just do your homework. If you’ve got back-to-back port days, give yourself grace. Take a breather. A midday nap is not a missed opportunity—it’s survival.

🎉 7. Don’t Skip the Onboard Fun

This is where the memories are made. Cruise ships are packed with friendly competitions, trivia, game shows, karaoke, ice skating, comedy shows, dance classes, and more. Gramps never misses The Quest (and honestly, the rest of us never stop laughing about it). Join in—even if it’s just once. You’ll be glad you did.

🚢 Final Thought from the Deck

Cruising for the first time can feel a little overwhelming, but with a few smart tips and a go-with-the-flow attitude, you’re in for one of the best vacations of your life. So pack light, plan ahead, and most importantly—don’t forget to have fun.

We’ll save you a seat at the belly flop contest.
